After only a few weeks Tib turned on Stanely and demanded payment in full and left the group. Stanley felt he had no choice and continued to forge forward into the dangerous wilderness. At a town now called Stanleyville, Stanley put in his boat and began to sail down the uncharted river on December 26, 1876. For the next month they sustained numerous attacks from barbaric natives. In addition they had to once again move over land to avoid the seven cataracts or major falls of the river.
